It’s hot and humid in South Florida and the players are feeling the pain after two hard days of intense skill workouts and two afternoon games at the Ganon Baker Basketball Elev8 JrNSA Camp in Delray Beach.  Baker and his coaches ran these elite players

through a series of ball-handling, 1-on-1 moves, worked with players on ‘getting open’ and creating space and then after the catch, scoring moves originating from a jab step.  They then put in good work on MOVING WITHOUT THE BALL, a lost art in the game today.  Reversing the ball, not dribbling without a purpose, cutting hard, and SPACING the floor was drilled as well.

That alone seems like a full day to most but to Baker and Co. they do it all in the morning session only to be topped off with a session on the jump rope.

Lunch couldn’t come soon enough for some but for those who couldn’t get enough, we hopped next door to observe an NBA style skill development workout.

In all, seven players were in attendance, three European players: Two from Italy’s Lega Due (Alessandro Paesano, Basket Ferentino & Edoardo Giovara, Casale Monferrato) and one from LEB Gold in Spain.  There were also three NBA Draft hopefuls including Scottie Wilbekin (Florida/PG), Brady Heslip (Canada, Baylor/G), and Khyle Marshall (Butler/SF).

Ganon and one of his lead coaches and Elev8 Trainers, Cody Toppert, ran the workout with the Phoenix Suns in the house to evaluate the talent.  Heslip can shoot the heck out of the ball and Marshall looks like he’s working on his perimeter game after being a defender/rebounder, cutter/slasher type of guy at Butler.  Wilbekin, who led Florida to the Final Four,  has a chance to be very good if he can get more consistent from deep.  He’s very comfortable off the bounce and in pick and roll situations that the Gators ran a lot of.

The energy level that Baker, Toppert, and camp co-Director Terry Drake put forth in their workouts is outstanding and the players feed off of that.

Back to the camp, the young players played two games each and had a classroom film session with Ganon Baker teaching them the nuances of the game, mind and body!
